Document Summary

Psych discussion #9: distinguish between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Set point: the genetically influenced weight range for an individual; it is maintained by biological mechanisms that regulate food intake, fat reserves, and metabolism. Genes also determine how much brown fat a person has. This is a type of fat that is important in energy-burning and regulating body weight but is lacking in obese people and could be one reason they have excess fat they can"t burn. A mutation in the genes regulating normal eating and weight control may relut in obesity. Ob gene causes fat cells to secrete a protein called leptin. Bulimia: the person binges and then purges by inducing vomiting or abusing laxatives. Anorexia: the person eats hardly anything and therefor becomes dangerously thin; they have severely distorted body images and think they are fat when they"re emaciated. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all mental disorders.
