CAS AN 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Patrilocal Residence, In Essence, Patrilineality
Document Summary
Domestic-public dichotomy - there are times when the role of men and the role of women have sharp division with society, and anthropologists ascribe the term domestic-public dichotomy to this phenomenon. In these communities, men were expected to engage in more outside work. They were the ones that were involved in areas of trade, politics, warfare, and work. By contrast, women did the activities around the home, including the gathering of fruits and plants, child bearing, and preparing for feasts. These stereotypes carried over into modern civilization and are just recently undergoing slow change. Extradomestic - this terms refers to duties required to maintain the well being society that individuals are expected to complete that take place outside of the home. In essence, they are duties that are considered to be within or pertaining directly to the public domain and well being of the community.
