Health psychology: focuses on causes of illness, treatment of illness, illness prevention & health improvement. The health care and health status of women. Biases in health care: women have often been neglected in medicine and in medical research. Male as normative so female assumed to be identical to man: gender stereotypes common in medicine. Women complaints not taken as seriously, seen as more emotional & can"t understand info about medical problems: medical care provided to women is inadequate or irresponsible. Receive too much medical care (diseases women speci c, hysterectomies, mastectomies) or too little (when both men and women experience disease: physician-patient communication patterns often make women women feel relatively powerless. W > report that physician doesn"t listen & talks down to them. Women live about 5 years > than men (in virtually every country) Females second x chromosome may protect from heath problems, don"t do high risk activities, men exposed to dangerous conditions at work (miners)
