PSYC 2230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Episodic Memory, Synapse, Long-Term Potentiation
Document Summary
Maintenance rehearsal- repeating the thing (ex. phone number) you want to keep in your memory by repeating it over and over, but this results in poor memory for when you want to remember the number later. Elaborative rehearal- repeating the items in a meaningful way (ex. Rst 3 numbers of the phone number are the same as your own), which results in better memory. Levels of processing theory: shallow processing: little attention to meaning, with focus on the physical features of the item (capitalization, deep processing: close attention to the meaning of the item, and relating it to something else. Self-reference effect- memory is improved when you relate the item to yourself: when asked if the word describes them, the subjects recalled the word better if they had responded yes . Generation effect- generating material yourself ( lling in the blanks for the pairs of words) rather than passively rehearsing it can lead to better memory.
