Word diabetes come from greek word called diabainein meaning pasing through to excessive urine production in diabetes the latin word mellitus which means honey was added in 1675 in reference to sweet taste of urine. There are 4 types of diabetes, type 1, type 2, gestational and secondary diabetes. Diabetes characteriszed by elevated blood sugar caused by: no or insifficent insulin release, inability of insulin to bind to insulin receptor, or both. Both very similar; there is partial or incomplete destruction of pancreas resulting in little or no insulin production where the glucose channel are not open and glucose remain outside of cell in blood. Type 1: auto-immune process cause complete and irreversible destruction of pancreas. Generally occurs between 12-14 years and trigger not known. Secondary diabetes caused by medical condition, diease, or medications. Can occur any age, can be partial or complete destruction of pancreas. Insulin first discovered by candians banting and best in 1922.
