What is diabetes: the term diabetes (greek) was coined by aretaeus of cappadocia. Derived from the diabainein meaning passing through or siphon . One of the signs that you have that you developed diabetes is that you pee all the time and that your pee is sweet because you are excreting a lot of glucose through your urine. In 1675, thomas willis added the word mellitus, a word from latin meaning honey , a reference to the sweet taste of the urine. Early known symptom of diabetes - sugar urine. The ancient indian tested diabetes by observing whether ants were attracted to a person"s urine, and called the ailment sweet urine disease . The korean, chinese, and japanese words for diabetes are based on the same ideographs which mean sugar urine disease . There are 4 different types of diabetes - type i (insulin dependant, juvenile-onset), type ii (non-insulin dependant, adult-onset), gestational diabetes, secondary diabetes.
