Document Summary

Garro"s work showed that alkaptonuria is an inherited disease (problems with metabolism) - shows that genes encode proteins. Beatle and tatum also found a relationship between enzymes and genes by seeing that. Neurospora converts simple chemicals into complex ones (eg: from amino acids to proteins and from nucleotides to dna/rna) Ceertain genes in neurospora blocked at certain pathways and they require certain nutrients to move forward - diagram. They discovered 1 gene 1 enzyme hypothesis, which later became the 1 gene-1 polypeptide hypothesis (they later realized that proteins are made of polypeptides, which are coded by separate genes) Pathway from gene to polypeptide is broken down into transcription and translation. Transcription: dna is made into rna copy. Translation: rna copy is made into amino acids that are assembled to make a polypeptide. Flow of dna to rna is called cenral dogma. In transcription, rna polymerase creates the complementary rna by reading the template strand (dna strand).
