Just as parents affect adolescents" behaviour, adolescents affect parents" behaviour. When adolescents engage in problematic behaviour, parents respond by becoming more punitive or detached. Adolescents who have greater genetic risk for developing problems more likely to evoke from their parents the sort of behaviour that has been shown to lead to the development of behaviour problems. Parental responsiveness: degree to which parent responds to child"s needs in accepting, supportive way. Parental demandingness: extent to which parent expacts and demands mature, responsible behaviour. Set standards for child"s conduct but form expectations consistent w child"s developing needs. Value autonomy but accept ultimate responsibility for child"s behaviour. Child is self reliant and has strong sense of initiative. Adolescents more psychosocially mature than peers raised with other styles. More self asured, creative, curious, socially skilled, academically successful. Value obedience and conformitym favour more punitive and forceful measures. Adolescents dependent, passive, socially inept, less self assured and curious.
