Socialization: the process by which children acquire beliefs, motives, values and behaviours deemed significant and appropriate by older members of society. Family social system: complex network of relationships, interactions, and patterns of influence that characterizes a family with 3 or more members. The social systems perspective emphasizes that all families are embedded within larger cutural and subcultural contexts and that the ecological niche that a family occupies can affect family interactions and the development of a family"s children. Blended/reconstituted families: new families resulting from cohabitation or remarriage that include a parent, one or more children, and step relations. The amount of responsiveness and affection a parent displays toward a child. Accepting parents praise and encourage children, warm but can become quite critical when child misbehaves. Less accepting parents are quick to criticize, belittle, punish or ignore and rarely communicate to children that they are valued and loved.
