Conformity refers to a change in behaviour resulting from the real or imagined influence of other people: informational social influence and normative social influence is 2 main reason on for conforming. Private acceptance occurs when we conform to others behaviour and truly believe what they"re doing or saying is right. Public compliance occurs when we conform to other behaviour publicly but don"t necessarily believe in what they"re doing saying. People that are most likely to conform because of informational social influence when it is an ambiguous situation, crisis situations and situations where other people can be perceived as experts. To resist informative social influence there must be careful consideration of another person"s interpretation of a situation is more legitimate than your own: ask yourself questions and seek out your own information. Normative social influence we conform to be liked by others, it is based on the need to be accepted: it used to avoid humiliation, rejection and punishment.
