Document Summary
Chapter 8. 2 problem solving judgment and decision making. When we try to solve a problem or decide between alternatives, we are actually drawing on our knowledge of diff concepts and using that info to try to imagine diff possible outcomes. Problem solving: accomplisha goal when the solution ofr the path to solution is unclear. Algorithms: problem-solving strategies based on a a series of rules: logically, follow a set of steps, objective, slower; e. g. computer. Heuristics: problem solving strategies that stem form prior experiences and provide an educated guess as to what is the most likely solution. Problem solving rules and strategies get in the way of problem solving: e. g. Mental set: attempts to apply a routine solution to what is actually a new type of problem. Occur in many diff situations: functional fixedness: individual identifies an object or technique that could potentioally solve a problem, but can think of only its most obvious function.
