Chapter 1: Introduction to Critical Health Studies
•Might question the fundamental ideas and concepts that are part of how
power is exerted"
•CR dont accept ideas are appropriate simply bc they were provided by
those with power and authority "
•Finding and questioning the ideas behind everyday social practices
•CR develops & uses extensive bodies of thought as to why ideas & norms
are correct and incorrect & why they are held "
•Advocating alongside and on behalf of people and issues that are
neglected or marginalized in mainstream policy, administration and
research
•Certain people- those who are vulnerable-“fall off the map” of policy,
practice and research e.g. Disabled, LGBT, Aboriginals"
•CR’s challenge the neglect of these people to make an effort to highlight
vulnerability, inequality, and oppression "
•Addressing pressing social and health issues that negatively affect
individuals and populations
•Constant argument: CR should aim to alleviate mental and physical
suffering"
•Aims to understand what constitutes human suffering, to the extent to
which suffering is unacceptable and what constitutes human flourishing "
•Drawing on philosophy and social theory to inform research
•Many theoretical perspectives can provide new ways of understanding the
complex matters of health and illness"
•Involving communities as partners in research, developing a “public
approach”
•Engaging with various “publics” can directly encourage social reform and
change "
•Might involve direct action and an activist approach"
