Health studies research uses quantitative and qualitative research methods: quantitative methods: statistics, census data, surveys, qualitative methods: interviews, focus groups, observation techniques, document analysis. Critical research emerged in the 1990s as something unique and broader. Involving communities as partners in research, developing a public approach: engaging with various publics can directly encourage social reform and change, might involve direct action and an activist approach. Thinking and acting outside the box : criticality involves the production of new ideas and approaches, even those that might seem radical and unconventional.
