PSY395H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Subcutaneous Tissue, Orexigenic, Energy Economics
Document Summary
It is a hormone that mediates long term regulation of energy balance, that suppresses food intake and induces weight loss. It is a fast acting hormone that seems to play a role in meal initiation. Leptin and ghrelin systems are disturbed in obese patients. In obese patients, anorexigenic hormone leptin in increased while orexigenic hormone ghrelin is decreased, however they are leptin resistant. Both originate in the periphery system and signal different pathways to the brain, particularly the hypothalamus. It causes the initiation of different signalling cascades that leads to changes in food intake. It is located on chromosome 7 and it produces leptin.
