Zygote: one-celled organism formed by the union of a sperm and an egg, all other cells in the body developed from this single cell. Prenatal period stages: germinal stage (first 2 weeks) Begins when zygote is created in fertilization, then zygote multiplies, implants itself on the uterine wall placenta: structure that allows oxygen/nutrients to pass into the fetus from the mother"s bloodstream, allows bodily wastes to pass out the mother. Thin membrane keeps bloodstreams separate: embryonic stage (two weeks till end of second month) Vital organs and bodily systems begin to form, organism now called embryo.
