Document Summary
Chapter 11: human development across the life span. Development begins with conception: conception =when fertilization creates a zygote, zygote: one-celled organism = sperm + egg. Each cell: carries messages from the parent cell carried on the chromosomes that lie within nucleus. Chromosomes houses genes, functional units in hereditary transmissions: development is rapid in this period. Prenatal period: from conception -> birth; 9 months of pregnancy. Genes carry details of hereditary blueprints revealed through life. The course of prenatal development: germinal stage (first 2 weeks, embryonic stage (2 weeks/months, fetal stage (2months to birth) During implantation = formation of placenta: structure that allows oxygen + nutrients to pass into fetus from mother"s bloodstream, bodily wastes to pass. External environment can affect fetus indirectly through the mother. Mother and fetus linked through the placenta; her actions affect prenatal development i. e. drug usage may cause long-term health consequences.
