Document Summary
Motivation: relates to the study of the processes involved in goal-directed behaviour. Often associated with specific emotions, motivation and emotion often linked. Sports psychologists are experts in facilitating motivation motives: needs, wants, interests, desires that propel people in certain directions, to achieve specific goals. View motivational forces in terms of drives, apply to homeostasis homeostasis: state of physiological equilibrium or stability (to behaviour) drive: internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activities that should reduce this tension. Drives motivate us to perform actions to reduce the drive, hungry during long class motivates us obtain food, regain equilibrium and reduce the drive. Drive theories cannot explain all motivation, homeostasis appears unrelated to thirst for knowledge, motivation may exist without drive, buy ice cream after ad not hunger. Propose that external stimuli regulates motivational states incentive: external goal that has the capacity to motivate behaviour, such as ice cream, steak, monetary prize, approval, good mark, promotion.
