Document Summary

Vancouver island is a temperate rainforest more moderate temperature but with abundant rain and moisture. Much of the area has not been influenced by human activity. There is work being done to restore it (restoration ecology is a large subject in ecology) European settlement was the first to interact with the rainforest they cleared trees to build up their settlement. We now want to restore the rainforest to pre-european conditions. First natations also impacted the environments (who have lived therefore hundreds of years prior. They too had to have cleared a lot of land to build their homes. Fire was suppressed when humans were introduced (they may have been less fires, more controlled fires) therefore understanding the impact of fire can help us to understand how we can restore previous conditions. What affects might we see: introduction to different species in regeneration phase, different plant diversity.
