Chapter 2 principles at the root of ethical debate. Beauchamp and childress: leading figures in bioethics, the 4 principles . Nonmaleficence: to do no harm (goes along with beneficence) Has a long history going all the way back to hippocrates (hippocratic oath: graduation ceremonies in medical schools cross the world) Respect for autonomy aka respect for persons a basic principle which underpins individual liberty and the right that people have to conduct their lives as they see fit with due to respect the rights of others. Justice: essentially the idea that people should be treated fairly. Fairness complex idea; does not simply mean treating everyone alike. A strong principal which carries a clear message and practice for principal service framework to shape or bring order to ethical debate and help us steer a course through the complex terrain of moral philosophy.
