PHI 1370 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Whistleblower, Casuistry
Document Summary
Four principles of medical ethics (beauchamp and childress): beneficence (do good), non-maleficence (do no harm), respect for autonomy (individual liberty), and justice (fairness in treatment) Principalism: used to describe an approach to healthcare that advocates basing nursing practice on these four fundamental principles. They provide a basis for ethical debate. Four principles theory is useful as it gives an unrestricted view of the different kinds of justification for moral decisions. Similarly to aristotle, the casuist would argue that the rights and wrongs of a case should be determines bearing the facts of the individual circumstances and specific situation in mind. Casuistry is sometimes referred to as false or weak reasoning. There is importance in the transparency of when it comes to serving the best interests of the patients in the example on page 20.
