BIOL240 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1.1: Treponema Pallidum, Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Arsphenamine
Document Summary
Module 1. 1: microbiology is the study of microbes. Homeostasis- actively respond and adapt to changes the body experiences to maintain constancy. Dictyostelium discoideum- unique bacteria that exists individually under normal conditions but under times of stress, forms a into a larger organism by joining with other copies of the same bacteria. Each bacteria then acquires a specialized role to serve for the organism as a whole. Polypeptides- 1/2 of the cell i. ii. chains of amino acids that form proteins necessary for the cell"s functioning. Examples: enzyme for speeding up reactions, microtubules to facilitate movement of molecules, active/passive transport channels, polymerases etc. b. Involved in the formation of the cell"s dna. Necessary for forming structures to retain the cell"s genetic information. Involved in the creation of the cell"s membrane. Includes glucose, chitin and cellulose i. ii. iii. iv. c. d. Problematic because the two have a lot of other similarities.
