Correctional change has taken place when: the severity of punishment of convicted offenders is modi ed, explanations of criminal behaviour change, new structural arrangements are established, number of offenders involved in the process change. Personal retaliations used to be the primary response to criminal behaviour. Before then they dealt with punishments by death penalty, nes or by exile. Death penalty was common to stop the rise of the middle class (dangerous class) Change from capital punishment to imprisonment happened because of the classical school. Classical school said they were committing crimes because of free will and were making rational choices. Maximized pleasure and minimized pain (reward out weigh the punishment) Bentham said the more serious the crime the longer the punishment should be. Positivist school said criminal behaviour was determined by biological/psychological/ sociological factors. Said the scienti c method should be used to study crimes. Said criminals were different than others in society.
