Designed to describe & measure behaviour of ppl/animals as it happens in daily lives. May be measured as it happens or recorded by others or recorded and then coded later. Difficult: data has to be organized into measured variables. Data can be collected from many different sources/ways: i. e. , clinical psychologist observations, scientist"s observations of animals. Sometimes only way to collect data -> i. e. , impact of earthquake. Ecological validity: extent to which research is conducted in situations similar to everyday life experiences: some people might not even realize they"re being observed. Making observations of behaviour & recording them in objective manner. Example of guy going into monotonous factory job and found a bunch of things people did to make it fun rich data. Participant: becoming a part of the setting, involving self. Not letting people being observed knowing about it concealment. Best chance of getting to know people being observed.
