Portuguese were the rst to make dramatic breakthroughs in exploration and colonization- established bases in the azores and madeira islands, had small ships called caravels which were ideal for ocean travel, and had the most skillful navigators. The asian trade- portuguese came to the east as traders, not conquerers: established military outposts for protection, controlled the most important spice islands. Spain was more interested in exploring the new world. Indies as well as to any undiscovered lands east of an imaginary line xed west of the cape verde islands and spain had whatever was west.
