The sixteenth century was an age of exploration. State formation in the 15 and 16th centuries. Charles vii (1422-61) created a permanent army. Louis xi: expanded the army and got control over regions such as brittany and the orleans. Caravels: small ships that were ideal for ocean travel and trade, improvement in ships. Prince henry the navigator: surrounded muslim enemies while gaining access to the african bullion trade. Henry vii: centralized government, departments of state, bureaucracy. Muslim traders were dependent on the slave trade for their armies. Africans enslaved those who were captured in tribal wars. Spanish trades man valued the african slaves trade skills, viewed them as their profit. Lisbon became one of the trading capitals of the world. More people died from medical mistakes than actual diseases. People believed that the world was round not flat. Maps meant to be used as an encyclopedia. Bartholomeu dias: traveled the cape of good hope in 1487.
