What Is Assessment?
• Educational assessment
o Comprehensive process of collecting a variety of data for the purpose of making
educational decisions about individuals
• Psycho-educational assessment
o More often used because the data gathered usually includes a variety of indices of social
and psychological variables, as well as measures of academic achievement
o Best viewed as a dynamic process that involved gathering data from multiple sources
Why Is Assessment Important?
• Provides education professionals with objective, valid, and reliable data
• Specialized programming can range from minor modification to fully specialized programs

• Most learning differences are caused by variables that educators cannot control or remediate
• Behavioural differences
o Educators are concerned
o Vast majority of problematic behaviours are caused by learned behaviours or learned
reactions
