Psych 1030 seminar #1 jan 19th, 2017. Finding truth using empirical evidence (can observe) Number of research designs that allow us to gather info. Allows us to determine if 2 variables are related, but does not allow us to make infrences about causation. Example: ask 30 students 2 questions: how much coffee had you have today, scale of 1-10 how tired are you. The results will give us info about the relationship between drinking coffee and feeling tired we could not conclude that drinking coffee caused the students to feel less tired. Helps us to establish a casual relationship between variables. Manipulation changing a variable to determine its casual power. The variable that is manipulated is the iv. This creates two groups: the experimental group, the controlled group. Random assignment a procedure that allows change to assign people to different groups example: independent: amount of coffee (manipulated) dependent: tiredness 1-10 scale (measured)
