Document Summary

A procedure for finding truth by using empirical evidence. There are a number of research designs that allow us to gather information. Allows us to determine if 2 variables are related, but does not allow us to make inferences about causation. Ex. : we could ask a group of 30 students 2 questions. How tired are you on scale of 1-10: the results would give us information about the relationship between drinking coffee and feeling tired. We could not, however, conclude that drinking coffee caused the students to feel less tired: other possible causes. A research design which helps us to establish a causal relationship between variables. Two key features of an experiment: manipulation: changing a variable to determine its causal power. The variable that is manipulated is the iv. This creates the groups: experimental and control groups. The variable that is measured is the dv: random assignment: a procedure. Ex. : randomly assign students to 2 study conditions.
