Alcohol and other drug abuse is a prominent health issue in canada. Two million canadians meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse and substance dependence. With $ 40 billion being spent annually on alcohol and other drugs of abuse, there is a significant drain on the canadian economy toward health care. Treatment goals are influenced by the underlying theoretical view of substance abuse. View that substance dependence is a biological disease that someone either has or does not have.
