Document Summary

Atoms combine to form molecules, which can have different properties from the atoms they contain. In any living system, the molecules are organized into cells, the smallest units of life. Cells that are similar in function and structure form tissues. The human body contains 4 types of tissue: nerve, epithelial, and connective. Most organs do not function alone but are part of an organ system, such as the digestive system, the cardiovascular system, or the endocrine system. The digestive system, which is the primary organ system responsible for moving nutrients into the body, secretes hormones that help regulate how much we eat and how quickly food and nutrients travel through the digestive system. Hormones: chemical messengers that are produced in one location in the body, released into the blood, and travel to other locations, where they elicit responses. The nervous system sends nerve signals that help control the passage of food through the digestive tract.
