Atoms (smallest units of an element that retain the properties of the element) combine to form molecules (units of two or more atoms of the same or different elements bonded together) Cells - basic structural and functional units of living things. 4 types of tissues: muscle, nerve, epithelial, connective. Tissues organized in varying combinations to form organs (discrete structures composed of more than one tissue that perform a specialized function) Hormones - chemical messengers that are produced in one location in the body, released into the blood, and travel to other locations where they elicit responses. Help regulate how much we eat and how quickly food and nutrients travel through the digestive system. Nutrients provide structure (i. e. muscle protein or iron in the blood); supporting chemical reaction; providing energy required for the body to do work. Digestion - the process by which food s broken down into components small enough to be absorbed into the blood stream.
