Document Summary
Job structure: hierarchy of all jobs based on value to the organization; basis for the pay structure. Job evaluation: process of systematically determining the relative worth of jobs to create a job structure for the organization. Defining job evaluation: content, value, and external market links. Content has innate value outside of external market. Relevant groups can reach consensus on relative value. Job worth cannot be specified without external market information. Puts face of rationality onto a social/political process (establishes rules of the game) Major decisions in job evaluation include: establish the purpose of the evaluation. Must support organizational strategy, workflow, and is fair to employees: decide whether to use single or multiple plans. Singe plans are useful when work is common across the organization. Multiple plans are useful when the work content is too diverse to be evaluated by a single plan.
