Treeing: the process of going from article to article when searching the literature on a particular topic. This can have many benefits in refining the research ideas and possibly the question itself. A theory is an organized set of principles that may explain a phenomenon. A theory is the result of noting the general trend in data. It is important to note that many hypotheses make up a single theory. A theory is no good if it cannot be tested. Contrarily, an incorrect theory can have huge impact on the field if it begets future research and understanding. Basic research: is designed to understand behaviour by testing a hypothesis of a specific theory. Applied research: uses existing theories to augment understanding of social phenomenon. This method of research would be used to help solve social issues. Conceptual variables: variables that address abstract constructs, such as conformity, prejudice, self- esteem, attraction, or anxiety.
