Mood disorders: characterized by gross deviations in mood. 2 fundamental states of mood disorders: major depressive disorder: most commonly diagnosed & most severe depression: An extremely depressed mood state that lasts at least 2 weeks & includes cognitive symptoms (ex. Feelings of worthlessness & indecisiveness) & physical functions (altered sleeping patterns, changes in appetite/weight) to the point where event slight activity requires an overwhelming effort. Accompanied by loss of interest of ability to experience pleasure in life (anhedonia) Physical changes (somatic/vegetative symptoms) central to this disorder. Average duration of untreated episode = 9 months: mania: abnormally exaggerated elation, joy, or euphoria. Individuals become hyperactive, sleep little, develop grandiose plans, irritability, believing they can accomplish anything, & flight of ideas (speech is rapid & incoherent bc the individual is attempting to express too many ideas at once) Average duration of untreated episode = 2 to 6 months.
