Majority of accidental poisoning occurs in children under 5 years of age (often acetaminophen or aspirin) The ten most common accidental poisoning items include: acetaminophen, aspirin, bleach, diaper- pail deodorizer, chocolate flavoured laxatives, children"s fever drops, cough syrup, tranquilizers, birth control pills and cigarette butts. Major drugs groups often associated with suicide attempts include barbiturates and similar drugs. Barbiturate tablets were once dispensed as sedatives/sleeping tablets. Current day western society has replaced the barbiturates with benzodiazepine group drugs (ie. diazepam (valium)) as they are a much safer sedative.
