Greeks lived in almost every part of the mediterranean basin. The mountainous peninsula was an important part of the greeks. Greeks lived in small, independent settlements due to the mountains. A settlement and its surrounding territory; aka city-state. Settlements were divided by wooded hills; caused the communities to develop seperately. 3 major natural resources of athenians o o o o. Limestone was available in most parts of greece. Local clay was suitable for cooking wares, storage vessels, pottery etc. Athens had a unique clay where it became a distinctive orange color when baked. Terracing was adopted in order to increase area of cultivatable land (where crops can grow) There was a shortage of wood in athens at one point which caused them to rely on outside sources, mainly makedonia o. Xenophon talks about makedonia and how its such a good place for o o. For majority of greeks, farming was their livelihood.
