Greeks lived in small, independent settlements called polis, which means city" or city-state". Settlements developed separately even though they were close, as no individual could aspire to control agriculture land on both sides of the rough and uncultivated terrain. : megara 50 km from athens, thebes 70 km, and corinth 100 km. Because of limited resources and natural boundaries, polies didn"t grow big anyways. Athens unusually large, having 2500 sq. km known as attik .
