PSYC 2245 Chapter Notes - Chapter Ch. 7: Normative Social Influence, Mass Psychogenic Illness, Norm (Social)
Document Summary
Research suggests that the pressure to conform may be shared with other species. Conformity: a change in behaviour as a result of the real or imagined influence of other people. This is all a part of being in an individualistic culture. This culture emphasizes being independent, thinking for yourself, and standing up for yourself. Result, we maintain the belief that our behaviour is not influenced by others, even when reality suggests otherwise. Informational social influence: the need to know what"s right . In many everyday situations, we feel uncertain about what to think or how to act. We simply don"t know enough to make a good or accurate choice. Informational social influence: conforming because we believe that others" interpretation of an ambiguous situation is more correct than ours and will help us choose an appropriate course of action. Asking others what they think or watching what they do helps us make sense of a situation.
