Potential to change attitudes and behavior (not actual change) People may be unaware of their power. Perception target perceives power holder controls a valuable resource. You can only have a power relationship when one party depends on the other (e. g. , in the past women depended on their husbands for income) Agreement that people in certain roles can request certain behaviors of others. Zone of indifference -- range of behaviors for deference to authority. Norm of reciprocity -- felt obligation to help someone who has helped you. Information control -- right to distribute information to others: creates dependence, frames situation. Some people may not follow instructions if the supervisor asks them to do something illegal or unethical. Legitimate power can control who and when they give out information: creates dependence; more senior and rely on them for resources.
