1. The five faces of oppression are exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural
imperialism, and violence. Exploitation: steady process of the transfer of the result of the
labor of one social group to benefit another (Shaw & Lee 53). Example: minorities with
the jobs the rich community wouldn’t want like janitor or working at McDonalds. Most
of the rich community wouldn’t be seen working there or even looking for jobs like those
so they are privileged to have the people that would do it for them because without them
they wouldn’t have clean schools, fast foods and cleaning companies to clean their
offices and houses. Marginalization: expulsion of entire groups of people from useful
participation in social life that potentially subjects them to severe material deprivation,
and possible extermination (Shaw & Lee 53). Example: women being paid less than men,
old people getting fired from their jobs and single mother. Men got paid higher better
than women which is why women were hired easily at some jobs because you had to pay
them less. Powerlessness: powerless lack of authority; they are those whom power is
exercised without their exercising it; they are situated so that they must take orders and
rarely have the right to give them (Shaw & Lee 53). Example: women in society in
general, the divide between the working class and the middle class. Women took order
from their superior in the job most of them were a man. The people with power exercise
their power to show who is the boss. Privilege because most of the men had the power
and showed the women who were boss either at jobs or at home. Cultural Imperialism:
universalization of a dominant group’s experience and culture- its establishment as the
norm (Shaw & Lee 53). Example: immigrants that speak a different language forced to
speak a certain language, slaves not allowed to have children and not considered a full
person. This discourages immigrants spreading their culture and makes them feel like
