Shaw and Lee
Chapter 4:
1. Gender is inscribed in the body by we recognize as masculine or feminine or basically
what to identified as (Shaw &Lee 181). We identify people based on their genitalia to see
whether they are male or female. Bodies are all shaped differently but they try to conform
to the beauty ideals that you have to be thin, young, abled, smiling women (Shaw &Lee
188). The beauty ideal doesn’t apply to everyone because everyone’s body shape is
different it’s why the average size changed to accommodate people that are big. In some
cultures, large bodied women are considered more beautiful then slim women (Shaw and
Lee 183). The connection between gendered and racialized bodies is that the beauty ideal
only works for one race which is the white community (Shaw and Lee 183). It works for
the white community because they have enough money to pay for beauty products and
services offered.
Chapter 6:
1. Women do intimate sex often run the risk of being labeled as a slut (Shaw & Lee 328). A
woman who is seen sleeping around is labeled as a slut or hore but when a man does it is
totally normal and okay. People talk about it more when a woman sleeps around with
people and neglect it when men do. This allows men to gain power in the relationship.
Example like when a man wants to have sex with his wife and forces her into having sex.
