Document Summary

When you are going to set up a research experiment, you want to randomly assign individuals to groups. But if you are using an attribute variable, then you cannot assign subjects to groups. They are what they are, and you can"t change it. If you are not able to randomly assign participants, then you are looking at an attribute variable (av). True independent variable would be something you do have control over. If you are using one of those, then you are doing the true experimental method (experiment proper) Find a group of meerkats and you rig up a stuffed hawk to fly over the group. In one condition, you have a predator flying over the top and then in the second condition there will be no predator there. Although the setup is very similar to the quasi-experiment, it is a true experiment because the variable we are studying is randomly assignable.
