Beginning of 19th century, discontent, want democracy, lost war to japan, failed rev of 1905. 1989 revolutions in eastern europe fall of berlin wall: hungary opens border with austria for a month, others follow, open doors, go to germany- iron curtain . Nov 9 1989: end of berlin wall, able to free yourself from ussr. Reform plans, shift power from party to state: glasnost (openness) & perestroika (restructuring) Backfired, led to destruction of communist party, but also to end of cold war.
