The community of those seeking enlightenment: sangha, anyone from monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, the whole community of buddhists, a model of the buddha"s life. Buddhists take the three refuges in the triple gem and are said to take refuge . Taking refuge is said to be derived from the days following the buddhas enlightenment: merchants passed buddha and bowed to take refuge, formula was prescribed by buddha shortly thereafter. Buddha- he is the teacher of the refuge. Sangha- it is they who help others to find that refuge. Prostrating (lay flat, face downward) oneself in front of the buddha, dharma, and sangha. Good or evil deeds commited in each life. Bad karma fuels the endless cycle of rebirth (samsara)
