Input: keyboard - mouse - scanner - upc reader - microphone - still camera - video camera. Process: cpu - main memory -> storage: magnetic disk - optical disk - magnetic tape. Output: display - printer - speakers - screen projector - plotter. Cpus vary in speed, function, and cost. Cpu works in conjunction with main memory (ram). Cpu reads data and instructions from memory, and stores results of computation in memory. Storage hardware used to save data and programs common storage devices. Data is represented by on and off or 1 and 0 (a bit ) Anything that can possess two states could represent data (and in combination with other data, information ) Bits are used for computer data to represent electronically. A computer can be designed so an open switch represents 0 or off and a closed switch. For optical media, small pits are burned onto the surface of the disk so that they will reflect light.
