Document Summary

The relationship of the individual to the community. Associations are important because the mind is enlarged, and people grow by interacting. There are downsides to democracy: individualism (not egoism/selfishness) People focus on their own life, not public life. In aristocracy, there are lots of connections between people because of the hierarchy. In a democracy the people have no obligations to one another. We focus only on our immediate family, not on our ancestors or descendants. We feel like we have a duty to mankind, but less connection to particular people. Has its restraints: free institutions: widespread political participation. The fact that we vote brings us into contact with each other. Local issues engage people more than federal ones. The moral effect to engaging in local government is that it encourages people to join the community: associations (non political): there are many groups for various social issues.
