Philosopher, lived in same period as sima guang/ wang an shi, but not a household name/ not as famous. Developed idea of qi (some confucians/ non-confucians who used it, not necessarily a confucian idea) Qi = vital energy, material force, breath - used in philosophy and in scientific thinking. Used concept of qi as basis for ethical arguments, there are an eternal cycle of matter, and that matter is qi. Qi comes out of great void (recycling house where qi is constantly churning and bubbling, out of great void comes qi in particular forms) Qi can refer to anything animate and or inanimate. Qi, after used up, will be recycled in the great void. Description/definition :cheng hao and cheng yi, early neo-confucian philosophers who helped develop metaphysical concepts of li (principle) and qi (material force) Contemporary, mature, similar to zhu xi, talk about metaphysics. Cheng hao & cheng yi = cheng brothers. Nephews of zhang zai, furthered idea of qi.
