Document Summary

Be able to compare and contrast voluntary movements with reflexes at the behavioral and physiological levels. Intentional movements, initiated by an internal decision to act. In contrast, reflexes are triggered by external stimuli. Reflexes can be modulated, but are going to perceive in response to a stimulus whether you want them to or not. Voluntary: it"s your internal desire that will trigger the movement. Quality of movement is dependent upon experience you have doing the movement. Voluntary movements have a flexible relationship to sensory input. Requires planning/programming because different strategies can be used to produce same movement. Planning a voluntary movement: determine the goal. Voluntary movements have a purpose: plan and program. How big should each movement be: send motor command to muscles. Aids in planning the movements, as well as aids in balance during movement. Indirect and direct determine net amount of inhibition on the thalamus. Identify cortical motor areas and list brodmann areas associated with each.
