Vertical - it is my duty to take care of my family i will sacrifice, parents & children stay together. Individualism - way of thinking about yourself b/w people (horizontal) & authority (vertical) Horizontal - i"d rather depend on myself than others. Vertical - it is important i do better than others. American skating - person feels they did it by themselves, japanese - group effort. Collectivist - coke advertises that it brings people together. Achievements - good grades, college admission, good job = f(your ability/effort) = merit. Belief depends on function of experiences and who wins in contests.
