Type of downslope movement of earth materials. Understand the forces that act on a slope. (in class notes, p. 212- Driving (movematerials down a slope) & resisting forces (oppose downward movement: most common driving force = weight of slope material, most common resisting force = shear strength (resistance to failure by sliding) Breaking a mineral or rock into smaller fragments without altering its chemical composition. Process that breaks down rock through chemical changes. Terms: angle of repose, load, frictional resistance, cohesion. Angle of repose - the steepest angle at which loose material remains stationary without sliding downslope. Load - any materials carried by a stream. Frictional resistance - resistance to movement between the slope material. Cohesion - an attraction between substances of the same kind. Understand how a little water can make a loose material more cohesive, but a lot of water can weaken the pile and make it flow.
